The African Students Education Support Initiative (ASESI) has decried the recent revoke of Kalu’s bail while he’s receiving treatment abroad as a sign that human lifes in Nigeria has no value.

According to the Executive Director of ASESI, Mr Chinonso Obasi, it is on record that since 2007 when this case was instituted, the former Governor of Abia State Dr Orji Uzor Kalu has been committed to his trial with strong conviction that the judiciary shall profer justice until now that he’s ill.

We’re interested that corrupt individuals must be prosecuted but most importantly the judiciary must do that without being biased.

As a Civil Society Organisation keen to seeing zero tolerance to corruption, we’re aware that Dr Kalu travelled for an emergency surgical operation in a hospital at Wiesbaden Germany. The EFCC prosecuting Counsel Rotimi Jacobs admitted during the hearing on Monday that Kalu notified the commission through a letter before traveling. Evidences also show that the medical report dated 5th November 2018 received by Federal High Court Ikoyi, shows that Kalu needs 10 to 12 weeks to fully recover from Surgical operation. Obasi said.

The ASESI Executive Director call on Justice Zainab Adamu Bukachuwa the President of Nigerian courts of Appeal to cancel the bail revoke on Kalu as his present health condition must be prioritized since he fully followed the due process before traveling for treatment. Revoking his bail within this period of uncertain health condition is considered unhealthy and lack of respect to human life.

Furthermore, Obasi also said that ASESI will continue to collaborate with anti corruption agencies in the fight against corruption giving high regards to the rule of law.
