The National Council of State on Tuesday approved a sum of N27,000 as the new Minimum Wage in the country.
This was disclosed by the minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige while speaking to correspondents at the presidential villa after the council’s meeting presided by president Buhari.
Ngige further said the new Minimum Wage will be implemented after a minimum wage bill have been sent to the national Assembly for approval in the next 24hours.
The minister further explained that N27,000 is the official benchmark for all employers of labour that has more than 25 workers on their payroll.
The Federal Government had resolved to pay its workers N30,000 as the new national minimum while the State Governments are free to negotiate with their respective staff, Ngige said.
In attendance were Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Abdulsalami Abubakar and the former Head of the Interim Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, among others.
