Shi'ites during one of their protests

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN otherwise known as Shi’ites has rejected the rigid conditions Kaduna State Government is praying to the Court to attach to the bail of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Their position was conveyed via a statement by the organisation’s Director of Media, Abdullahi Musa, immediately after a brief protest by members of group in Abuja on Thursday.

Musa described the conditions attached to the bail application as a ploy by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, to silence El-Zakzaky in detention.

His words, “Sequel to the press statement released by Kaduna State Government dated August 7 and signed by Samuel Aruwan stating terms and conditions for the medical leave of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife, we wish to inform the public that the conditions are not more than a desperate move by el-Rufai to assassinate the Sheikh in detention, and we hereby turn down the conditions.”

The Kaduna State Government, had among other things, requested that “the Federal Government of Nigeria shall obtain from the Government of India an irrevocable guarantee that it will not entertain any application by the defendants/applicants or any third party seeking asylum under any guise or conferring the status of political prisoners or any other status aside from being medical patients on the defendants/applicants and shall also restrain the defendants/applicants from any act inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria.”
