As the world marks this year’s Press Freedom Day amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and its attendant economic crunch, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), South East has solicited financial assistance for its members in the zone.

NAWOJ Vice President, Lion Chibota Edozie, who made the plea in a statement in Enugu on Sunday, regretted that women journalists in the zone are being left out in the distribution of palliatives by government, the political class and the private sector.

According to her, “as the world today commemorates the world Press Freedom Day, l solidarize with female journalists in the South East, particularly at this period of Covid-19 pandemic.

“While the theme for this year is ‘Journalism Without Fear or Favour’, I venture to say that this journalistic mantra can only be exercised in an atmosphere where the economic and financial needs of journalists are met.

“Despite being vulnerable to the dangers of contracting COVID-19 in the course of their duties, females journalists have been left out of any palliative assistance, either by the government, the political class and even private sector.

“While we appreciate that journalists are expected to perform their duties without fear or favour, only those who are alive and well can effectively do this.

“I once again call on the government, the church and the private sector to come to the aid of female journalists, particularly at this time where they are most vulnerable, being at the ‘war front’ reporting the COVID-19 pandemic,” she pleaded.
