The residents of Enugu State can’t stomach the outrageous house rents in the state and a lot of persons are calling for the establishment of ‘Rent Control Board’ as a means of checking this ill wind that won’t blow anyone any good.

Some people are urging the state Governor, to send an executive bill to the State Assembly for without law, control and restriction, the society will become a jungle and the survival of the fittest becomes the only way out.

Without check on the unbridled greed of men, the shylocks will be taking pounds of flesh always.

The continuous increase of rentage in Enugu State has become a thing of great concern to average Enugu citizens and residents alike. It is now a common thing to hear that 2/3 bedrooms flat is rented for as much as One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (1,500,000) Only. This is aside other ancillary payments, such as Legal fee of Hundred Thousand Naira, Agency fee of Hundred Thousand Naira and obnoxious caution fee of Hundred Thousand Naira, cumulatively amounting to One Million Eight Hundred Thousand Naira (1,800,000) renewal in twelve months. One wonders where majority of Enugu tenants who are predominantly Civil Servants will be getting such huge amount for rent to be able to live within the capital to attend to his official duties.

It has also become a common place for Civil Servants in the state to find a way of short-changing the system and getting involved in dubious activities to make meet up with basic needs (shelta inclusive).

This existing state of affairs is encouraging corruption and other criminal activities in Enugu State. Enugu is gradually becoming a haven for Internet fraudsters known as Yahoo boys and other fraudulent activities where boys of University age live in luxurious apartments, drive Posh cars, yet with no legitimate business. The most expensive hotels are filled to the brim with the attendant harlotry and other sundry crimes therewith.

It has become imperative and exigence for the State government to establish “Rent Control Board” to sterm this unfortunate increase in rentage without corresponding increase in the source of income of the tenants.

The Sokoto State government has set the pace by enacting Rent Control Law and also establishing Rent Control Board to enforce the law.

The Ugwuanyi administration can take a clue from the Sokoto example and replicate same here for the overall interest of Ndi Enugu.
