Ahead of the forthcoming council election in Enugu State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has charged the State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC to conduct a credible process.
The Enugu State Independent National Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, had fixed 23rd of February, 2022 for the conduct of the election.
The opposition party gave the charge when the State Working Committee of Enugu APC led by their Chairman, Comrade Adolphus paid a courtesy visit to the ENSIEC chairman, Dr Mike Ajogwu on Tuesday, at the State Headquarters of the Commission.
They asked ENSIEC to abide by the democratic principles to avoid post election disagreements in the State.
Comrade AC Ude, who in company of his predecessor, Dr Ben Nwoye and other State working committee members of the Party decried the fact that since 1999, the PDP Government have always turned the state to a one party state by making sure that the Party wins all the 260 councillorship and 17 chairmanship positions in overtly doubtful elections by ENSIEC which are done through a massive rigging and intimidation of the opposition political parties .
He called on Dr Ajogwu to make a difference this time around by conducting a transparent election so that other Political parties could win some seats.
“Monotony kills interest and variety is the spice of life.
“Since 1999 in Enugu State, credible elections has been hard to come by in the State, due to the ruling party’s penchant to rig and maim other political partiee.
“In some situations, they wont even come with electoral materials even after boosting of being in charge.
“It is time to get it right and we had a thorough and fruitful meeting with the ENSIEC chairman and he assured us of maximum commitment to organizing a free, fair and credible election,” Ude told newsmen after the meeting.
Comrade Ac ‌Udeh also stated that the only panacea to a fruitful political growth in the State is competition; which he said, is a major ingredient of progress that can only manifest when different political parties win election in different areas.
He posited that, ENSIEC should emulate Kaduna state which is an APC controlled state, where other Political parties, especially the PDP, won many positions during their local Government elections; an exercise he has also said, has been adopted by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, since the leadership of President muhammadu Buhari.
During the visit, ‌Dr Mike Ajogwu (SAN) stated that, the coming election will be free, fair, credible and transparent.
According to him, ” I am like grandfather and would like to leave a legacy.
“While we are working hard to organise credible elections, other political parties should not just sit down in their comfort zones, but should start a comprehensive and vigorous campaign to win.”
‌The ENSIEC Chairman, gave the Enugu APC leadership copies of the Official Gazette containing the guidelines of the forthcoming local government elections; urging them to study it and be ready ahead of Time .
In his remarks, the immediate past Enugu State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC, Dr Ben Nwoye, Stated that, he has always known Dr Mike Ajogu to be a credible man and hopes that his promises will be fulfilled.”
