Immediate Past General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Jonathan Gunu Taidi Esq, has raised concerns about recent happening which taint and raise cogent questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s police force.
In a statement titled “Who is Shielding the Police?”, Taidi lamented the involvement of ‘super cop’ Abba Kyari in successive criminal scandals includes facilitating fraud and an international drug cartel.
“In June 2021 the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, requested for the extradition of DCP Abba Kyari. While the drama as to whether or not he should be extradited raged on, the news came like a storm that NDLEA has declared DCP Kyari wanted in connection with suspected high level complicity in an international drug cartel.
Not so long ago the DCP was a decorated ‘super cop’ unrivalled in his exploits at bursting suspected notorious criminals. Now that he has been bursted, the time has come to break the shield around our police, providing cover for their nefarious activities. The Nigeria Police is now famous for everything negative. ”
According to the Former NBA Exco, contrary to what they are trained and paid for, Nigerian polie officers are now competing with notorious criminals in aiding, abetting and perpetuating criminality in the country.
“While our expectation is that they are paid and trained to ensure our safety so we can at least sleep with one eye closed, the reality is that our police force is competing for space with the most hardened and notorious criminals.”
According to him, the time has come to institute a forensic audit of officers and men of the Nigeria Police. Such an audit should be extended to the lifestyle of our policemen, the property they own and the company they keep.
