Barrister Ugochukwu Ezekiel of E H Ugochukwu Chambers, has called for the rearrest of Silas Onu, the Chairman of Ebonyi State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as proclaimed by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

Barrister Ezekiel in a terse statement frowned at the action of Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Moses Jitoboh whom he said guaranteed Mr. Onu following his arrest by officers of Special Weapons And Tactical Team (SWAT) on Wednesday, 11th May, 2022.

Journalist101 had reported that the PDP Chairman was arrested by police officers in Abuja following the warrant of arrest issued by an Abuja Court.

But Mr. Ezekiel, Esq. in a statement issued on May 12, 2022 accused the police chief, Jitoboh of guaranteeing his release with the promise to produce him on Thursday, a promise he didn’t keep.

Ezekiel who’s the counsel to Tochukwu Okorie, the embattled Chairman of Ebonyi PDP who’s at the Appeal Court to recover his mandate asked the Inspector General of Police, to rearrest Onu or prevail on DIG Jitoboh to produce him to face prosecution.

The  statement reads:

“ARREST OF SILAS JOSPEPH ONU BY MEN OF SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICAL TEAM (SWAT), FORCE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION AND INTELLIGENCE DEPARTMENT, FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA.

“We are aware that our Client, Honourable Tochukwu Okorie lodged a complaint against Mr. Silas Joseph Onu (who parades himself as Chairman of Peoples Democratic party, Ebonyi State Chapter) for forgery and threat to life.

“In line with the extant provisions of our laws, a Court of competent jurisdiction issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of the fugitive (Silas Joseph Onu) by any Police officer anywhere found in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The warrant was issued on the 27th day of April, 2022. The warrant is attached.

“The Court also directed that the SWAT unit of the Force directly under the Inspector General of Police should investigate and produce Mr. Silas Joseph Onu before the Court for trial if found culpable.

“After painstaking efforts by different departments of the Force, Mr. Silas Joseph Onu was sighted, shown and served with the warrant for his arrest and was promptly arrested by officers and men of SWAT at about 7:03 pm on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.

“Our Client, Hon. Tochukwu Okorie identified and directly pointed him out to the Police officers and he was taken to the Area 3 office of SWAT.

“However, after he was picked up, one DIG Moses Jitoboh (We now understand to be his ally ) allegedly guaranteed to produce him by 12:noon on the 12th day of May, 2022.

“Lawyers from our office led by the Head of Chambers were at Area 3 office of SWAT unit till 4:pm and Mr. Silas Joseph Onu never showed up. DIG Moses Jitiboh who guaranteed that he would produce him was equally not at the SWAT office. We have evidence of DIG MOSES JITIBOH’S GUARANTEE and shall produce same before the any authority(s) when required.

“We now call on the Inspector General of Police to do or cause the following to be done:
(a) Ensure immediate re- arrest of Mr. Silas Joseph Onu in line with the order of Court, or
(2) Instruct DIG MOSES JITIBOH to produce Mr. Silas Joseph Onu for immediate prosecution.

“We hope that this clears the air on the events of the last twenty four hours which, as usual, was twisted with unnecessary threats to the media by Mr. Onu.

“We believe that with this statement Mr. Onu should know where to deliver his writ of summons and allow innocent reporters and publishers some rest.”
