Enugu Police Command, has said “Intensive manhunt operation” is underway to apprehend the gunmen responsible for the murder of three officers in the state.

JOURNALIST101 had reported that three policemen were brutally murdered by heavily armed gunmen around 9:20pm at the popular block busstop, Chime Avenue, New Haven, Enugu North Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the assailants overtook the police patrol van and opened fire on the Operatives.

“Immediately they overtook them (the policemen), they stopped and opened fire on them. I quickly reversed and entered the next street for safety.

“When we couldn’t hear the gunshot anymore, we came out and saw one policeman struggling with his life on the floor. We thought that’s the only victim until someone saw two more persons inside the drainage. The two officers inside the drainage were dead.

“We helped the Divisional Police Officer of New Haven Police Division to take the policeman to the hospital. Their guns were also carted away by the hoodlums,” the eyewitness narrated.

The fourth police officer in the vehicle is yet to be accounted for after the attack which lasted for less than 10 minutes.

In a terse statement made available to newsmen, Enugu Police Command Spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe said: “Intensive manhunt operation is ongoing to fish out the unknown assailants who, operating in a Lexus Jeep, suddenly opened fire on a moving Police patrol van on duty, along Chime Avenue, New Haven, Enugu, on 07/09/2022 at about 10.15pm, leading to three (3) of the Operatives sustaining severe gunshots wounds and later confirmed dead at the hospital.
