Anambra State Police Command has confirmed attack on its Ihiala divisional headquarters by gunmen with explosives in the early hours of Wednesday.

The police said the gunmen threw explosives into the facility which set the building on fire.

The police officers at the facility were said to have engaged the gunmen and recovered an Ak-47 rifle — but the culprits escaped.

The Police in Anambra said its operatives had repelled an attack by some gunmen on Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovered an abandoned AK-47 rifle.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra command, confirmed the attack to newsmen on Wednesday.

Ikenga said: “Our operatives in the early hours of today engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovered one abandoned AK-47 rifle.

“The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives although no casualty was recorded.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station had already ignited a fire that affected the building.”

Ikenga assured that security operation was still ongoing in the area, promising that further details would be communicated to the public.
