The body of Enugu Councillors has cautioned the Labour Party Governorship candidate, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga against using the death of one of their members as a platform to seek cheap popularity.
Barr. Edoga during his condolence visit to the family of Late Hon. Duhu Nelson Sylvester Nnacheta according to a video of the visit, claimed the late Lawmaker who was gruesomely murdered by gunmen on Sunday, promised him (Edeoga) that his ward was solidly behind him.
But in a statement issued on Monday, by Hon. Nnamdi Odo, Coordinating Leader of 260 Ward councillors, the body said there’s no truth in the statement which has “caused uproar within the ranks of Councillors and our party as it has portrayed late Hon. Duhu as working for Edoga, which will be tantamount to anti-party.
“It is very unfortunate that Late Hon. Nelson Ofunwa cannot speak for himself at the moment, therefore, the entire 260 ward councillors of Enugu state have risen at this moment to put up this public statement and speak up for our late member.
Hon. Odo stated that late Duhu was a committed party man and couldn’t have worked for the Labour Party, adding that the only time he (Ofunwa) talked about supporting Edeoga was before the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“We want to state unequivocally that there has never been a time that our late brother who in his life has been a solid and verified member of PDP in anyway supported Labor Party for governorship. He has never engaged in any anti party activity before, during and after states and general election not to talk of being a front line supporter of LP governorship candidate as Edoga claimed.
“Hon. Nelson was a dogged fighter and committed PDP member from day one. It is on record that with the efforts of Hon. Nelson, PDP won in Eha Ward against LP.
“The said statement made by by Hon. Sylvester pledging support for Barr. Edoga was made on the 25th of May 2022 before the primaries. Edoga had gone to consult the Nsukka LGA stakeholders. Ofunwa familiarized with him as a brother from the same geographical enclave.
“Hon. Sylvester only canvassed for support for Barr. Edoga before the PDP primaries.
“The 20 ward councillors in Nsukka LGA will bear witness that Hon. Ofunwa worked hard to deliver his ward to PDP. He was amongst the first to throw his weight behind our present Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah.
“We equally wish to remind Barr. Edoga that death is a solemn moment for deeper reflection and not a time to weep up sentiment. That elections are over and he should stop using the death of Hon. Sylvester to seek cheap popularity.
“We continue to pray for the repose of our late brother. May he rest In the bosom of the Almighty. Amen.”
