In commemoration of the International Women’s Day 2024,Women’s Right Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) in partnership with Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre, Nigeria (CIRDDOC) Nigeria, and support from Ford Foundation, has inaugurated two groups; Male Champions and Women of Resilience to take the campaign of this year’s IWD theme “Inspire Inclusion” to the grassroot.
Speaking at the event, Mazi Jerry Udoji said that WRAPA has been in the forefront of advancing the rights of women in the communities and grassroots level.
“WRAPA is very interested in ensuring that there’s total inclusiveness from the grassroot level; women, men, people with disabilities should be included in all levels of community governance- the town union or traditional rulers cabinet.
He also said that a lot of trainings and exchange programmes have been facilitated by WRAPA to preach about this inclusive governance and give everybody a voice.
Speaking to Journalists after a one-day workshop on “Men and Boys Inspire Gender Equity and Social Inclusion”, Chief Mrs. Virginia Obianyo, the Programme Officer of CIRDDOC said “what we’re doing today is in line with the theme of this year’s celebration.
“Today, we inaugurated Male Champions and Women of Resilience. These are the people that has been there and fighting for this issue. They will move into their various communities to start sensitizing the people on the need for equal opportunities and equal rights in the society. This will help in tackling some of the societal issues the nation is facing because bringing the women into decision making processes makes the difference.
The keynote speaker, Ms. Kobi Ikpo of Teenage Development for Africa admonished the participants to be open-minded and plan to be intentional about being inclusive.
She further stated that the other gender should be deliberate in every activities or event and get everybody involved. “Every category of persons within our society should have a say and women in particular should have a say.”
