An emergency meeting of governors of the 36 states of the federation has kicked off in Abuja.
The meeting is holding at the secretariat of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) at Maitama.
Our correspondent reports that the meeting was conveyed so as to reach resolutions on the issue of national minimum wage and other issues concerning state governments.
The agenda of the meeting obtained by our correspondent indicates that the governors would debate the resolutions of the Tripartite Committee on national minimum wage and reach a consensus.
It also indicates that the Chairman of the NGF and Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman Abdulraqaz, would update governors on the issue of local government autonomy which is pending in court.
Daily Trust reports that the governors had rejected the N62,000 minimum wage proposed by the federal government, explaining that some states would have to borrow to pay salaries if the amount is implemented.
But the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) are insisting on N250,000 wage.
On Tuesday, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) stepped down the memo on minimum wage.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, had told newsmen after the FEC that the Council could not take a decision on the issue of minimum wage because it involves local government, states, federal government and organised private sector.
Deputy Chairman of the NGF and Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde; Dauda Lawal (Zamfara); Charles Soludo (Anambra); Yahaya Inuwa (Gombe); deputy governors of Borno, Akwa Ibom and others are in attendance.
