Kimberly Cheatle, the Director of the United States Secret Service, has stepped down amid intense pressure and calls for her resignation.

The decision follows a failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, during which a bullet narrowly missed his head and struck his ear.

Cheatle’s resignation comes after her appearance before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, where she faced tough questioning and declined to answer several inquiries.

Republican lawmakers had been pushing for both her impeachment and resignation.

The incident that prompted her resignation occurred weeks ago when a 20-year-old man evaded Secret Service agents and fired at Trump during a presidential campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Initially, Cheatle stated that she would not resign despite the backlash. However, the mounting pressure ultimately led to her decision to step down.

She was appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the Secret Service in 2022.
