The details of the meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security chiefs has emerged. The President had convened a critical meeting with the leaders of security agencies at the State House, prompting the postponement of this week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Recall that despite the president’s call for an end to protests, demonstrations against Nigeria’s economic troubles persisted across some states of the country.

Following the urgent security discussion, General Christopher Mustapha, head of Nigeria’s defense, stated that those who violate the law will face consequences.

General Mustapha remarked that displaying the Russian flag in Nigeria constitutes a grave offense. “We aimed to update Mr. President on the current situation. Since the riots began, all security agencies have come together. Initially, the unrest was deemed peaceful; however, we have identified individuals who seek to exploit the situation to incite chaos. The rise in criminal activity, looting, and theft is evident.

“Moreover, we have observed foreign flags being flown within Nigeria’s borders, which is entirely unacceptable. We are issuing a stern warning, as the President has instructed us to convey: we will not tolerate the display of foreign flags in Nigeria. This constitutes a treasonous act and will be treated as such. No one should allow themselves to be manipulated by others.

“Regarding coups, Nigeria is a sovereign and democratic nation. All security agencies are committed to defending democracy and ensuring its continuity. We will not permit anyone to engage in acts that threaten our government through any means.

“For those displaying foreign flags, many are young individuals being pushed into this. We are actively identifying and pursuing those who are behind this manipulation, as we understand these flags were manufactured elsewhere. We will take decisive action against those responsible.

“The President has been clear: we will not accept any disruption to Nigeria’s peace and tranquility. We stand united here to reassure Nigerians that we are cooperating effectively to uphold security and stability.

“We have made it clear that the military will intervene if the situation escalates. The act of pushing individuals to carry foreign flags in Nigeria is crossing a red line, and we will not accept it. Those involved will face prosecution, and they will be held accountable.”
