Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed allegations of an impeachment plot against him by unidentified “aggrieved Senators,” labeling the rumors as mere “mischief” and “fake news.”

Akpabio made his comments during the Senate plenary on Wednesday afternoon, directing the Senate Committee on Special Duties to investigate the origin and promoters of the false claims and report back to the Red Chamber within 24 hours.

“We sit here diligently, unaware of the mischief unfolding around us. I propose we refer this matter to the Police Affairs. This fake news is now assigned to the Committee of Special Duties for a report back to the Senate within 24 hours.

“This is just one of the challenges we face daily. Some individuals may use AI to fabricate stories designed to generate traffic. I’ve heard they get paid by YouTube for increased views, so the source of this fake news could be profiting greatly due to the viewership. However, I trust the public understands this is entirely false news and that the chamber remains stable; impeachment is not on the table,” Akpabio remarked amid intermittent laughter.

On Wednesday morning, online news reports suggested that the National Assembly complex resembled a war zone as operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) took control, amid speculation of an impeachment move against Akpabio by unnamed Northern Senators.
