A 27-year-old man, identified as Chidera Njoku, has been remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly threatening to kill his mother, Mrs. Ngozi Njoku, if she failed to give him ₦200,000.

Njoku, a resident of Kabusa Village, Abuja, was arraigned before the Wuse Magistrate Court on Tuesday on a six-count charge bordering on threat to life, assault, theft, extortion, mischief, and criminal intimidation.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, C.C. Okafor, told the court that the defendant’s mother reported the matter to the Kabusa Police Station on August 21.

Okafor said the defendant not only stole some items belonging to his mother but also conducted himself in a manner that endangered the lives of both his mother and sister.

He listed a cell phone valued at ₦140,000, a 10kg gas cylinder, five litres of oil, and six bags of charcoal as some of the items allegedly stolen by the defendant.

The prosecutor added that when confronted by his sister, the defendant reacted violently.

“He used a motor engine belt on his sister and inflicted serious injuries on her. He also threatened to kill his mother if she refused to give him ₦200,000,” Okafor told the court.

Magistrate Ekpenyong Inyang ordered that the defendant be remanded at a correctional centre and adjourned the case until October 6.
