Beijing on Friday denied trying to meddle in US presidential election after American tech giant Microsoft said it had parried cyberattacks from overseas groups \u2013 including from China \u2013 against both the Republican and Democratic campaigns.<\/p>\n
Microsoft warned it had detected attempts at election interference from overseas, including Russia, Iran and the China-based \u201cZirconium\u201d, which targeted people linked to Democratic candidate Joe Biden\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n
But China batted away the allegation, accusing Microsoft of \u201cfabrication\u201d and \u201ccreating trouble\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe US presidential election is the US\u2019 internal affair,\u201d said Zhao Lijian, spokesman of the Chinese foreign ministry.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have no interest to interfere in it, and we never interfered in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
China and the United States are trapped in a sprawling power struggle reaching into trade, the origins of the coronavirus, defence ambitions and tech security.<\/p>\n
Washington has called out Chinese tech firms \u2013 from Huawei to Tik Tok \u2013 as state actors working for the Communist Party of China, claims Beijing and the companies vehemently deny.<\/p>\n
Zhao returned fire on Friday, warning that the world should instead be on \u201chigh alert\u201d for American tech companies \u201cinstalling back doors\u201d and harvesting personal data for security services.<\/p>\n
With the US presidential election two months away, Twitter, Google and Facebook have all said they are reinforcing protections to curb the spread of misinformation.<\/p>\n
