The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT have proposed a new retirement age for teachers in the country.
In a proposal sent to the Ministry of Education and the National Assembly, the NUT asked to increase the retirement age of teachers from 60years to 65years.
The minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu disclosed this during a public hearing yesterday said the motive was for the need to have quality education to students all over the nation.
“Nigerian teachers to some extent require a reasonable retirement age like their counterparts in India, Canada, Belgium that have increased the retirement age for teachers to 65 years.
“We are appealing to the House to approve the bill because the ministry is in support of increasing the retirement age of teachers,” Adamu added.
Hon. Zakari Mohammed, Chairman House Committee on Basic Education, stresaed on the importance of teachers in the nation and assured that the bill will be passed.
He said “Teachers are the bedrock of any nation and as such their wealth of experience must be tapped to enhance the wellbeing of society.
“How long should we tap that knowledge legitimately in the school system is the question we except to answer today?”
