The police in Enugu State has confirmed the death of 8 persons in Igogoro community of Enugu Ezike, Igboeze North LGA of Enugu State.
The victims were said to be trapped inside a tank in a construction site where they died from carbon monoxide suffocation.
Six of the eight victims were reported to be indigenes of Amachalla community that share common boundary with Igogoro village
Reacting to the development, the Police spokesman in, SP, Ebere Amaraizu said; “No fewer than eight persons have been confirmed dead in Enugu underground water safety tank.”
In the statement obtained by Journalist101, SP, Amaraizu confirmed that the “incident occurred at a building site located at Igogoro in Igboezee North local government Area of Enugu state on 22/7/19.”
The statement attributed the incident to a yet to be identified worker in the site who on that fateful day and in the process of trying to evacuate water from the said tank got trapped inside the under ground tank. When he wants forthcoming, his co-workers in the site and having waited for him to know avail went to assist him and were also trapped there and became unconscious.
They were later recovered by passersby and police operatives who arrived at the scene and rushed the victims to general hospital Ogurute, Igboeze North LGA where the Doctor on duty confirmed them dead.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police suleiman Balarabe has expressed shock at the incident which he described as “unfortunate.” He has also directed for a full scale investigations into the incident just as their dead bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
