The member representing Ezeagu Constituency in Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze has condemned the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu by Suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
In a terse statement signed by the Lawmaker on Sunday, 18th August, he queried the action of the group asking; “Is this the best way to say thank you to a man that stood by your pressure group when many politicians from the south east treated you like leprosy patient?”
He went further to state that he’s “not ignorant of the ill feeling of the people of the Southeast over the insecurity, injustice and marginalisation of the Igbos in the Nigeria state. I am certain that this is not a civil way to address these issues.”
Hon Obieze pleaded with Senator Ekweremadu not to relent in his service to his people drawing analogy with what the Jews did to Christ while he was on earth despite all his wonderful deeds.
“I also plead with Sen. Ekweremadu to; please not allow this action of a very few change his perception and love for his people.
“I hold the view that, if the Jews can crucify Christ after watching him raise the dead, heal the sick, feed them in thousands then we should all know that this is the price of leadership” the statement reads in part.
Read the complete statement below;
The event of yesterday, the 17th of August, 2019 involving one of the very best from our clime and former deputy President of the Nigerian Senate is very reprehensible and every man of good conscience must censure this unwarranted evil act.
Which person or group of persons in their right senses will behave in the manner this group chose to express their anger?
Senator Ike Ekweremadu has been in the forefront of the crusade for the inclusion of the Igbos in the scheme of things in the Nigerian state.
Is this the best way to say thank you to a man that stood by your pressure group when many politicians from the south east treated you like tuberculosis patient?
Against all odds, in the face of intimidation from some powerful quarters that wants the Igbos to be relegated to the background, Sen. Ekweremadu stood firm, defended the dignity of the Igbo man and gave us a voice.
I and the good people of Ezeagu, which I represent in Enugu State House of Assembly condemn in totality, the actions of this very few which doesn’t in any way reflect the character of an Igbo man.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jnr said; “When evil men must seek to perpetuate an unjust status quo; good men must try and bring to being, real order of justice” thus those who follow a violent and unlawful order that calls on them to assault, humiliate and insult our elders, cannot be too surprised when someone takes them at their words and respond in kind.
I wept while watching the inglorious clips of this sad and ugly incident.
I’m not ignorant of the ill feeling of the people of the Southeast over the insecurity, injustice and marginalisation of the Igbos in the Nigeria state. I am certain that this is not a civil way to address these issues.
Igbos have always been known for deep-rooted culture of respect and Sen. Ekweremadu has worked his talk to earn this respect.
I also plead with Sen. Ekweremadu to; please not allow this action of a very few change his perception and love for his people.
I hold the view that, if the Jews can crucify Christ after watching him raise the dead, heal the sick, feed them in thousands then we should all know that this is the price of leadership.
Rt. Hon. Chima Obieze
