ENUGU— The Enugu State Police Command said it has commenced a 3-day town hall meetings on community policing in some rural areas in the state, beginning with Nsukka community in Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu on Wednesday, the Command noted that the meeting with focus on police services and accountability was in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu in order to create a stronger relationship with the members of the community.
Part of the statement reads, “In compliance with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu regarding regular community meeting at all levels by Commands with a view to hearing the concerns of citizens and with the aim of building stronger relationship between the community and the Nigeria Police Force, the Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force through the support of the Nigeria Policing Programme, NPP, has commenced its three-day community town hall/regular meeting with Enugu North Senatorial Zone (Nsukka) in focus for 4/9/19.
“The second day will take the team to Enugu West Senatorial Zone on 5/9/19 with a town hall meeting at the local government council hall, Udi and on 6/9/19 for Enugu East Senatorial Zone taking place at the superior police officers mess Agbani Road, Enugu.”
Earlier in his remark, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Abdurrahaman thanked stakeholders present at the town hall meeting and assured them of maintaining a working relationship in line with the community policing tenets and to also use community engagement programme to address incidence of crime.
The commissioner of police who was represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Administrations and the Nigeria Policing Programme focal person in the state, ACP Oliver Amaechi, enjoined communities under Nsukka zone to continue to partner with the Command in line with the community-oriented policing tenets in order to continue to keep the environment safe and secured.
The state intervention lead of the Nigeria Policing Programme, Solomon Akpanufot thanked participants which included royal fathers, members of various union bodies, sister agencies, motorcyclists, market women leaders, road transport unions and tricycle, student bodies, academia, political class amongst others, assuring that the NPP will continue to support those activities of the Nigeria Police Force aimed at improving security and police accountability for efficiency and improved partnership.
The regular community town hall meeting focused on issues of transparency, community policing, accountability and community partnership.
The meeting is expected to elicit those salient points which will help the police to draw out plan of action that will serve the police and the public.
