New Berries Park, one of the popular relaxation spots in the heart of Enugu State was on Monday, 27th January, 2020, gutted by fire.
The fire, which started in the afternoon reportedly, destroyed properties worth millions of Naira while it lasted.
An Eye witness reported that the inferno which would have destroyed the entire park was brought under control by the combined efforts of men of the Enugu State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service following their prompt response to a distress call.
The cause of the fire disaster according to Mr. Abanonu Ikenna, the proprietor of the Park said was from the activities of a welders who was brought to handle some maintenance work in the park and the construction of roofs in the park with raffia aided the spread of the fire immensely.
“We were doing some renovations, so one of our welders was trying to couple some of the things he was doing and that triggered the fire.
“As you can see, everything is affected; the seats the fridges and the buildings. Nothing was left. I cannot quantify the loss now but I know it runs into millions of Naira, he said.
He also made an SOS call to the government and good spirited private individuals to enable him stand on his feet again as the fire has almost halted his source of livelihood.
