Innugration of Covid-19 Labour- Civil Society Situation Enugu State Chapter was done yesterday at the Nigerians Teachers House Otigba Junction Enugu. The Innugration was in line with memo from the National Headquarters of Nigeria Labour congress mandating the entire State to replicate the join Covid-19 Situation Room that will enable them engage and track both Government and non government activities against Corona Virus across the State.
During the Inauguration performed by the Nigeria Labour Congress Chairman Enugu State Comrade Virginus Nwobodo on be behalf of the National President Comrade Ayuba Waba Mni, he appreciated the commitments and active participation of all drafted Unions which 10 composising organizations was present out of the 12 Unions.
The objectives of the Situation Room are as follows;
To sensitize workers and citizens on the reality, prevalence, prevention and containment measures against Covid-19;
To embark on advocacy and social dialogue government and private sector employers to promote public health employment/income protection for workers;
To maintain surveillance on the impact of Covid-19 on the workforce and adopt appropriate positions;
To support workers who are in front line in the fight against Covid-19 with information and occupational safety kits;
To maintain a feedback relationship between workers, workers organisation, government and employers in the private sector;
To protect jobs, wages and livelihood of all Nigerians;
To engage the government on how best to gradually and systematically open the economy for business and production
To support effective control and protective measures against further spread fraternities of the novel corona virus disease;and
Serve as think thank to liaise and advise government on the strategy going foaward.
The membership are drafted as follows; NLC State Chairman,TUC State Chairman,Representative of Health Workers Union of National Association of Nurses and Midwives ,Representative of Joint Health Sectors Union,Representative of Nigeria Union of Journalist ,Nigeria Association of Air Transport Employee,Representative of Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers,Representative of Almagameted union of foodstuff and Cattle Dealers Associations.
Representative of Nigeria Medical Association and two Representatives of Civil Society Organisations. State weekly performance report will sent to the National Head quarters of Nigeria Labour Congress
Finally,a six man technical committee was equally constituted, led by Comrade Omeh Ezekiel of Joint Health Union and Comrade Igboke Onyebuchi Representative of Civil Society Organisations as Secretary. The Committee is requested to immediately come up with action plan on best way to engage every needed stakeholders and recommendations to enable the committee actualize it overall goal. In his acceptance speech the Chairman Technical Committee Comrade Omeh promised his strong commitments in delivering this critical assignment with every efforts it requires.
