In continuation with her year-end outreach to the less privileged, the Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) has been visiting Motherless Babies Homes and Old People’s Homes within its area of coverage, presenting them with food items, beverages and toiletries.
The Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh said that the visit which commenced on Monday is part of the organization’s way of giving back to the society and remembering the less priviledged and downtrodden.
According to Ezeh, a total of 10 Motherless Babies Homes and Old People’s Homes selected from the five South East States are beneficiaries of this gesture by EEDC.
“This gesture is done in the spirit of the Christmas season, a period to show care, love and affection to mankind”
On Monday, some representatives of EEDC, led by Mr. Ezeh, were at the FSP Children Home, Enugu and the Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Elderly, Achara Layout Enugu to present the gift items to the homes.
In Ebonyi State on Tuesday, the team visited the state branch of the Nigerian Red Cross and the Mile 4 Leprosy Center, Abakaliki, while on Wednesday, the team were in Anambra State and visited Model Compassionate Home, Awka and Umunna Motherless Babies Home, Odoakpu, Onitsha.
Expressing appreciation, Cynthia Onyemechere, who received the EEDC team at the Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Elderly, thanked EEDC for the kind gesture.
With a heart full of joy, one of the elders at the home, Mrs. Victoria Igwenagum, prayed for the progress of EEDC.
“I am overjoyed for your coming and for all the goodies you came along with. This shows you love God and He will love you more. May God replenish your purse and reward you in many folds” Mrs. Igwenagum prayed.
In his reaction, Elder Raphael Okorie, who is the Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Ebonyi State, on behalf of their management thanked EEDC for the kind gesture.
“I really do not know how to thank you people. It is part of you people to make sure that the poor join others to celebrate Christmas.”
In addition, the Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross, Ebonyi State branch, in charge of Motherless Babies Home, Chief S. N. Nweze, said, “Immediately I saw your vehicle, I started smiling, because it is a good thing you people use to do. We are very much grateful and God will continue to bless you people.”
At the Mile 4 Leprosy Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Mr. Christian who received the team appreciated EEDC for the visit and concern over the welfare of the patients. “May God continue to strengthen all of you and the entire EEDC,” he prayed.
Other locations to be visited before the end of the week include: Save the Child Motherless and Abandoned Babies Home, World Bank, Owerri, Imo State; Widow, Orphans and Destitute Care Center (Mercy Home), Orji, Imo State; Agape Charity Home, Ubakala, Umuahia, Abia State and St. Vincent de Paul (Disabled Home), World Bank, Umuahia, Abia State.
Just last week, as part of the Christmas Outreach, EEDC carried out a “Two-Day Free Diabetes Screening” where no fewer than 210 residents of Awkunanaw community in Amaechi Town, Enugu State were screened for diabetes and other related illnesses. Other screenings carried out include free blood pressure check, blood sugar check, Body Mass Index (BMI) status as well as general health counselling.
It will be recalled that EEDC has in the past engaged in initiatives aimed at empowering and enhancing the lives of the people, especially the youths. This includes the distributed books and other educational materials worth millions of Naira to secondary and tertiary institutions within the South East, in partnership with Sir. Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF).
