Ebonyi State on Monday inaugurated a judicial panel of inquiry into the crisis between the Effium and Ezza Effium communities in Effium, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The panel is chaired by Justice Omaka Elekwa. Others are Gilbert Okorie (Secretary); Eze Chukwu Agwu; Rev. Moses Ogudu; Rev. Okoro Agha; Mrs. Nkem Chukwu; Eze Ezeogo Ewah. They are to determine the remote and immediate causes of the crisis.

The communities have been at war in the last two weeks, with many lives lost and properties burnt.

Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe, who represented Governor David Umahi at the inauguration, said the panel is expected to submit its report in six days. He explained that security agents have been deployed in the communities to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Igwe said: ā€œYou know that crisis erupted in Effium some weeks back, and the state has taken deep steps in ensuring that peace and normalcy returns.

ā€œThe government procured some relief materials to assuage the pains of victims. Distribution will start as soon as the people return home.

ā€œThe governor has also directed the Commissioner for Human Capital Development to make other procurements and visit those who were rendered homeless.

ā€œYou are to determine the remote and immediate causes of the crisis, and determine the extent of damage to life and properties.

ā€œYou are also to determine those directly or indirectly involved in the mayhem, and apportion blames appropriately as you deem fit. You would also recommend measures and means to restore normalcy and forestall a recurrence.ā€
