The police in Enugu state has arrested a commercial bus driver after two guns (an English pistol with 4 live ammunitions and a locally made pistol) were discovered in an item with him.
The guns were hidden inside a rechargeable fan carton.
Parading the suspect at the command’s headquarters, the commissioner of Police in Enugu state, CP Ndastu Aliyu said his men stopped the vehicle and in the process of their regular stop and search, they discovered the guns which the driver said a soldier gave to him at their park to deliver to someone in Lagos state.
Speaking with Journalist101, the driver Usman Yusuf who drives for Benue Links said: “A military man gave me the waybill.”
Asked if he didn’t verify the content of the package before accepting it, Mr. Yusuf said “the soldier told me its a breakable food flask and it’s a gift he wants to give to someone in Lagos. He didn’t even give me any money, he told me when I get to Lagos, I will collect N2,000 from the receiver. ”
He also maintained that he never bothered to check the content of the package since its coming from a soldier.
“He came to our park in Markurdi, Benue State, saw me in front of my bus where he gave me the waybill. Because he’s an army officer, I didn’t bother myself to check it. I collected it and kept it beside my seat,” he said.
The driver who said he has been driving for over 20 years insisted it was a “waybill” given to him and he has the number of both the sender and receiver of the item.
