Former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; former governor, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi; traditional rulers from Enugu East senatorial district and other stakeholders of the zone, on Sunday, endorsed zoning of the governorship of Enugu state, stating that 2023 belong to Enugu East senatorial zone.
The stakeholders made the endorsement at a meeting of stakeholders of the zone convened by Ubosi at the palace of Odezuligbo-Nike, HRH Igwe Julius Nnaji.
Among stakeholders of the zone that attended the meeting included political and traditional leaders, youth and women groups.
Addressing the gathering, Senator Ken Nnamani stated that his political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had already made an announcement that the Party will only give the 2023 governorship ticket to an aspirant from Enugu East senatorial zone.
Supporting the resolution that the 2023 governorship ticket is exclusive to the Enugu East senatorial zone, former governor of the state, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani said that the agreement should be respected, noting that it was the entrenched zoning arrangement that has kept the state in a state of peace and tranquillity.
Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi stated that for peace sake, the zoning arrangement should be respected in the state.
“The people of Enugu East senatorial zone were gathered to say that we are not ready to fight and the on the issue of 2023 governorship is our turn. We are not fighting with anybody on that.
“We want other senatorial zones to support us. It started from Senator Chimaroke, and at the end of his tenure he handed over to H.E, Sullivan Chime and at the end of Sullivan’s tenure, he handed over to to the incumbent Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and it is necessary that at the end of Ugwuanyi’s tenure it will come back to us,” Ubosi said.
The meeting urged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to announce as APC did that the party will cede its governorship ticket to Enugu East senatorial zone.
The resolution of the meeting is in consonance with the clamour of Political Stakeholders from other parts of the state that the rotational Governorship in the State should remain uninterrupted.
Journalist101 recalls that in a birthday message to Governor Ugwuanyi to mark his 57th birthday, a former Member of the House of Representatives, KGB Oguakwa who represented Awgu/Aninri/Oji-River (Greater Awgu), had restated that “the certainty of equitable, predictable and orderly (Governorship) rotation, unbroken since this Republic’s dawn in 1999, has guaranteed sense of belonging, sustainable peace and unity for cohesive development”.
Also, the member representing Ezeagu in Enugu state House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Chima Obieze had stated categorically during a meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party that he won’t support anyone that seeks to occupy the Lion Building but not from Enugu East Senatorial zone, stressing that it’s the turn of the zone to produce the Governor of the State.
