The need for young minds to remain focused and shun acts of violence, cultism and other vices in order to be a champion for a greater society, has been canvassed.
This was stressed yesterday, May 25 by the National Coordinator Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), CSP Ebere Amaraizu while engaging students of the Coal City University, Enugu during a student interface with POCACOV at the university auditorium along Enugu/Abakaliki expressway, on the occassion of the university’s student week.
Delivering his speech titled: “Cultism and Social Vices: Causes, Effects and Strategies for Eradication”, Amaraizu described cultism as the practice or activities of a group who have extreme beliefs that are considered severe and whose activities constitute high volume of criminal activities, violence amongst others.
He emphasized that the choice of the usage of the word ‘Secret Cult’ is as a result of the fact that they are organizations of group of people whose membership and method of operations are considered to be unconventional and known to its members only, pointing out that “apart from the fact that it is described as a catalyst to many crime, it has become a global pandemic requiring inclusiveness and involvement of stakeholders in the approach to tame the tide and save our young minds from the claws.”
He further explained that “many reasons may have been advanced as being responsible for making young minds get involved into the bandwagon but you have to remain focused, steadfast and refuse to be lured, intimidated or coerced into joining any group because of its unpleasant consequences such as untimely death, perpetual fear, severe/life threatening injuries, imprisonment and rustication from school amongst others.
“I tell you those reasons they usually give you to lure you in are fake and handiwork of satanic empty promises which will make you to lose focus in life and go astray.”
He further reminded them that the future belongs to those who know the beauty of it, pointing out that POCACOV is a community driven program of the Nigeria Police Force linked to the public safety and security framework of the Police Force under IGP Usman Baba Alkali to enhance public safety, peace and security through stakeholders participation and involvement.
He used the occassion to inform the school about the activities of POCACOV Volunteer Clubs and Fan Clubs for schools and communities which takes effect in the school and to be coordinated by the POCACOV stakeholder and the Associate Dean student Affairs, Mrs Ifeyinwa Onyekelueze.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Afam Icha-Ituma represented by the Dean Student Affairs, Ifeanyichukwu Arthur Onyiah, had thanked the Nigeria Police Force for coming up with the POCACOV initiative which is providing solutions to numerous challenges confronting the youth through awareness creation and sensitizations amongst other and assured of the institution’s continual partnership with the Nigeria Police Force through the police campaign against cultism and other vices.
Highlight of the occassion was the recognition of the National Coordinator of POCACOV for his numerous contributions to impact positively on the youths for a better society.
