Residents of Omodioga community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State have fled the community in fear of a reprisal attack after the commander of the local vigilante was killed by suspected cultists.
The vigilante leader identified as Alex Umezurike was killed on Tuesday night by suspected cultists who invaded his apartment and fired shots at him.
According to a source from the community, Umezurike “was later chased into the forest where he was captured and beheaded by his attackers.”
His corpse was afterwards brought back into the community and “cut into pieces” by the attackers and his head paraded round the community.
In what appeared to be a reprisal attack, some houses have been razed down while inhabitants of the community have fled.
The late vigilante leader was a strong opponent of the recent disbandment of the vigilante group by authorities in the LGA.
The Rivers State police command has confirmed the incident, saying normalcy has since been restored in the community.
