The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has decried the incessant kidnap of its members.

The body also flayed the rising insecurity across the country and called for urgent actions to stop the ugly trend.

The association, while visiting security agencies in Port Harcourt as part of its week-long security awareness campaign, themed, “Making Nigeria and Nigerians safer and more secured”, said the idea was to show solidarity with the security agencies, as well as sensitise citizens not to abandon their safety in the hands of security organisations alone.

Addressing journalists after a visit to the Headquarters of the Department of State Services and the Police, the Port Harcourt Zonal Chairman, PENGASSAN, Peter Onita, said the union extended a hand of fellowship to the security agencies in the state to encourage them to do more in ensuring that lives of Nigerians were secured.

“With this awareness, we want the world to know that security should not be left in the hands of security agencies alone. It should be in the hands of everybody. Whatever we can do in our own little way, individuals and organisations should contribute to what the government is doing.

As we speak, our members are being kidnapped, as we speak, men and women Nigerians are still being kidnapped, but we know that this awareness will go a long way,” Onita added.

PENGASSAN also condemned the deplorable state of the Eleme section of the East-West road, near Port Harcourt, which led to angry youths shitting down the road in protest for seven days, before it was reopened.

Onita said the association had long been engaging the Federal Government urging them to urgently intervene in the repair of the bad road, adding that it was a shame that a road of such high economic value had remained in such a sorry state for decades.

“So we are in support in the call that the East-West road is given urgent attention and PENGASSAN had maintained that position even before now.

“We would like to tell the government that there is a need for them to work on that road. It is a shame that a road of that calibre has been bad for a long time now. The economic value of that section of the East-West road can never be quantified,” he added.
