Enugu Safety Group, ESG, has called on the government of the state to look at the indiscriminate positioning of cooking gas stressing the need for dealers to comply with Safety Protocols on Liquefied Cooking Gas.

ESG in a statement by their coordinator, Barr. Henry Okeke said exposure to the gas is unhealthy and called on the government to set up a task force to check the unauthorised siting of this businesses in Enugu metropolis.

The statement reads:

“Enugu Safety Group ESG warns against the unhealthy and reckless exposure of Liquefied Cooking Gas in Enugu streets and neighbourhoods.

“It has been observed that dealers in Cooking Gas can be found in every nooks and crannies of our dear State, thereby endangering the lives of our people. This unhealthy and unsafe practices is unacceptable.

“We are worried because prevention is far cheaper than disaster.

“Therefore, Government must step in by setting up a task force and taking other proactive measures to prohibit this dangerous trend.”

ESG also sympathised with the victims of adulterated kerosene in the state and thanked the Governor, Rt Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for promptly reaching out to the affected people.

They also called on Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR Enugu office to be alive to their responsibility to avert this kind of situation in the future.

“ESG deeply sympathises with the victims of kerosene explosion in the state and wish the survivors of the unfortunate incident a quick recovery.

“We commend the compassionate Governor of Enugu State for his timely visit to the victims of kerosene explosion and subsequently, taking care of their medical bills.

“Therefore, in order to prevent a worst case scenario, we must immediately ban sales of Liquefied Cooking Gas in our neighbourhoods and stipulate penalties for defaulters,” Barr. Okeke who is also an assistant to the Governor of Enugu State, insisted.
