Three police officers have been reportedly killed by yet to be identified gunmen around 7:40am on Wednesday, 8th September 2021.

The officers attached to Umutu Division in Delta State, were allegedly murdered by a gang of gunmen who reportedly stormed the security checkpoint where the policemen were operating along Obeti/Oliogo Road in Ukwuani Local Government Area of the state.

According to The Punch, the hoodlums also set ablaze the operatives’ security patrol Toyota Sienna recently donated to the Umutu Police Division.

One of the eyewitnesses who would not want his name in print told journalists that the hoodlums, after killing the police officers, went ahead to set them ablaze inside their Toyota Sienna patrol vehicle.

“Three Police officers attached to the Umutu Division Police headquarters were attacked and killed on arrival at a checkpoint between Obeti and Oliogo in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

“They were burnt beyond recognition in their Toyota Sienna patrol vehicle,” the eyewitness said.

Consequently, tension has gripped residents of Umutu, Obeti and Oliogo and other neighbouring communities following the incident.

Meanwhile, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the death of the officers.

He told journalists that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Mohammed Ali, has directed all Tactical Teams to the area to comb the bushes around in order to arrest the culprits and bring them to book.

”As I speak with you, the CP is in Umutu,” the PPRO stated.
