The Minister of Women, Children and Youth of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Filsan Abdullahi, has resigned her position due to poor working condition in the ministry.
in her resignation letter said making her in charge of a “barely functioning ministry, which had limited human resources and was without the adequate budgets to deliver tangible results, felt like a setup for failure.”
In the letter which she posted on her twitter page, the minister went on to say that: “Any situation that compromises my ethics is contrary to my convictions and values, and betraying these beliefs is a breach of trust to myself and our citizens.”
The statement reads:
“Taking the helm of a barely functioning ministry, which had limited human resources and was without the adequate budgets to deliver tangible results, felt like a setup for failure. However, I can proudly say that in just over a year, we have made great strides despite the odds and challenges.
“We have revitalised the ministry by re-engaging stakeholders and international partners, and
developed a solid 10-year plan to build new institutions, mechanisms and policies that I hope will make a difference in the lives of Ethiopian women, children and youth.
“Implementing the above-mentioned plans and initiatives will promote the rights and well-being of our women, children and youth, which has been long overdue. And now more than ever, it’s even more crucial at this critical juncture in our country.
“After giving much thought and consideration to our recent conversation on several national and institutional issues, in particular, the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth.
“Despite working through the pressures and strains of any job, I hope you will agree on the
importance of acknowledging the difference between when we should work through those
challenges and when it’s time to leave a position.
“Any situation that compromises my ethics is contrary to my convictions and values, and
betraying these beliefs is a breach of trust to myself and our citizens.
“For reasons of a personal nature that weigh heavily on my conscience, I regretfully submit my letter of resignation effective immediately.
“I would like to thank you Prime Minister for the opportunity you have bestowed upon me. It has
been a great honour and privilege to have served as the Minister of Women, Children and Youth of Ethiopia.
