The Nigerian Army has revealed the identity of the Brigadier General gunned down by fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno State on Saturday.
The Army General, Dzarma Zirkusu paid the supreme price alongside three soldiers in a very rare display of gallantry after killing several Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists while defending Nigerians living in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, Brig.Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, Army spokesperson, said in a statement on Saturday.
JOURNALIST101 reported that the troops from 28 Task Force Brigade, Chibok, had mobilised to provide reinforcement in Askira, which was under attack by the terrorists.
Nwachukwu said the gallant senior officer and soldiers before their demise, provided reinforcement in a counter offensive against the terrorists, and successfully defended the locals at the location.
The spokesperson revealed that in the fierce encounter which was still raging as at the time of issuing this statement, troops supported by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai had deployed five A – Jet, two A-29, two Dragon combat vehicles l, destroying nine Gun Trucks and an APC belonging to the criminals.
He noted that the military authorities have informed families of the fallen heroes.
“The family of the senior officer and soldiers have been contacted.
Saddened by the development, the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, while commiserating with the families and relations of the fallen heroes averred that they courageously defended the territorial integrity of Nigeria and Nigerians even at the price of their own lives .
He has also directed that the troops continue in the ferocious counter offensive and hot pursuit to eliminate the remnants of the fleeing terrorists.
