Senator Theodore Orji

A former Governor of Abia State, and Senator representing Abia Central, Senator Theodore Orji, has vowed not to contest for any elective position again “by 2023”.

Senator Orji, who stated this while addressing newsmen in Umuahia recently, restated his belief that a new crop of political leaders should emerge.

According to the 77-year-old, old politicians need to allow the young ones in public affairs.

“I don’t speak from both sides of my mouth. By 2023 I will not seek elective position again.

“Dominating the political space till eternity is inimical to raising new crop of political leaders,” Orji said.

Furthermore, Orji explained that his decision to step aside in 2023 was personal and not because of any pressure.

Senator Orji made history after he was elected as Governor while in prison in 2007 under the platform of Peoples Progressives Alliance, PPA which was formed by his predecessor, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu. A platform he ditched for All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and finally the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP after he fell apart with his former Boss.

He was the Governor of God’s own state for eight years after being elected twice and handed over to the incumbent, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu as the 4th democratically elected Governor of Abia State on May 29, 2015.
