A catholic church in Owerri, Imo State capital, Assumpta Cathedral had been gutted by fire in the late hours of Sunday night, destroying many properties of the church.

A source disclosed that the fire which started at about past 11pm was as a result of an electrical fault from the electrical unit which is in the church.

The eye witness revealed that the fire started with an explosion leading to sparkling of electrical wirings in the church.

People around when the incident happened were seen using water and other substances available to fight the fire pending the arrival of the state fire service.

The Director of communications for the archdiocese, Rev Fr Raymond Nzeremeogu, said Although musical equipments and other appliances were said to have been destroyed, fire fighters had helped in putting of the fire completely and stopping it from further destructions.

As at the time of this report, the exact damages caused by the inferno has no been revealed as the church is yet to release an official statement on the incident.
