The committee set up by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to pick Atiku Abubakar’s running mate have settled for Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.
Wike was picked ahead of Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Udom Emmanuel.
In the voting by the committee Wike got 16 votes while Okowa got only 3 votes
The committee set up to recommend a Vice-presidential candidate for Atiku Abubakar said Wike was chosen based on his individual strength and ability to mobilze support for the party.
“He was recommended based on his individual strength,” a source said.
It was gathered that the decision to pick a running mate for the party still rests with Atiku Abubakar.
Wike contested the presidential primaries of the party but came second.
Observers believe that Ifeanyi Okowa would have been the natural fit for the job, but the obstacle he has is his former godfather, James Ibori, who allegedly mounted a serious opposition and resistance to Atiku picking Okowa because his former political son Okowa hijacked the PDP delta state structure from him.
