JOURNALIST101 has reliably gathered that the immediate past Councilors in Enugu are planning a march against the state government in demand of their ‘severance package’.
According to sources, the ex council lawmakers said they weren’t paid before they exited office.
“What are they protesting for?” a government source told our correspondent. “Is it that these supposed lawmakers are ignorant or they’re deliberately making themselves a willing tool by some enemies of the State,” the government staff who doesn’t want his name in print said.
“Are they not aware that local governments are now autonomous? If they have any grievances, it should be directed to their respective local government areas that’s saddled with that responsibility. Its shocking how these persons ended up as council lawmakers because they’re not informed.
“It’s on record that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is one of the Governors in this country that doesn’t touch the funds meant for the local governments and I urge these former councillors to discontinue with this plan because its born out of ignorance except they have another motive.
“What they’re doing right now can be likened to the strike by primary school teachers which they have now called off. There’s financial autonomy and the primary school is under the purview of the local government, thus, going to court against the state government couldn’t stand judicial trial,” the source said.
One of the ex councillors who spoke to our correspondent said that they’re not planning a protest but a ‘reminder match’.
He said they have no reason to protest against the Governor because he has been a Father to them.
He was however silent if they will step down the protest.
