The Albino Foundation has launched the South East Zonal campaign tagged “Able2Vote” for persons with disability in Enugu State.
Speaking with newsmen, the programme Manager of The Albino Foundation; Ndifreke Ferdinand said the Zonal campaign “Able2Vote; is a voter education to sensitise persons with disabilities on their rights to vote and also reduce voter apathy among persons with disability to their barest minimum possible.”
She said the campaign, they’re expecting an increased number of persons with disability participating in election, not just as voters but also
“Come 2023, we want to see an increased number of persons with disability participating actively in elections, not just as voters but also in elective and appointive positions.”
In his address during the launch of the programme, the new Enugu Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Dr Chukwuemeka Joseph Chukwu, said the commission of poised to organised a free, fair, transparent and Inclusive election.
Dr. Chukwu said the Commission believes that anyone in Nigeria is able and urged them to feel free to visit their office if they’re confused about anything as it relates to the election.
The Enugu INEC Boss who said the commission believes there’s ability in disability, assured them that with the advent of technology, they will vote and their votes will count.
He reminded the physically challenged persons that the INEC portal is still open for the recruitment of adhoc staff for 2023 general election.
In their goodwill messages, the Enugu State Commander of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Aloysius Obiora, congratulated the persons with disability for recognising that they’re a voice and organising themselves to make a political statement.
“Your physical appearance has nothing to do with your membrane. Don’t allow anyone to feel pity for you.
“Please ensure you come out to vote and we in the security sector are ready to assist you by providing the necessary security.”
The joint national Chairman of persons with disability in Enugu State said they’re ready for the upcoming election and have their PVC and well enlightened about the election.
The campaign which is organised by the Albino Foundation is funded by the European Union through its EUSDGN Programme (Support to Democratic Governance In Nigeria)
