Some electorates in Enugu are lamenting the involvement of Reverend Fathers in the ongoing elections in the state.
Some of them are lamenting that the Catholic Priests took it upon themselves to storm some of polling units to guide voters in the rural areas on how to vote.
“If this madness by some Catholic Priests are allowed to go without serious disciplinary action, they should apologise to Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka,” an agent of one of the parties in Igboeze South told our correspondent.
“What’s happening here is a sad commentary, the Fathers are using their position to influence voters. They came here and were instructing their parishioners that see them (Priests) as their spiritual directors to vote in a particular direction.
“One of the voters told me that the Priests told him that he will go to hell if he disobeys his political directive,” the party agent who doesn’t want his name said.
The story is the same in Igboeze North as some voters said a Reverend Father was in their polling units commanding the voters that worship in his church to vote a particular candidate.
“This is church politics and its dangerous. Enugu isn’t known to play this level of sectional politics. What the Reverend Fathers did today will have great consequences and the church must resist it,” a voter in one of the polling units in Igboeze North said.
Efforts to reach the media director of the Catholic Church didn’t yield any result as at press time.
