Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa (Rtd), the former Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has passed on.
Anikwenwa who was the former Archbishop of Province II and the Retired Bishop of Awka Diocese, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion died on Monday, 13th March, 2023 at the age of 83.
His death was confirmed by the General Secretary of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, The Venerable Dr. Paul Dajur.
“The Church of Nigeria mourns the demise of the former Dean of the Church of Nigeria, the Most Rev’d Maxwell Anikwenwa, who was called to glory this day, Monday, March 13, 2023.
“Archbishop Anikwenwa was the former Archbishop of Province II and the Retired Bishop of Awka Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
“May God comfort his family, the Diocese of Awka, Province of the Niger and the Church of Nigeria as a whole and grant him eternal rest. Shalom!.”
Reacting to the sad news, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, described his death as “a painful loss in all ramifications.”
While praying for God to grant his soul eternal rest, Obi said the late clergy was committed to a better Nigeria.
“I was just informed of the death of Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa (Rtd). His passing is certainly a painful loss in all ramifications. Archbishop Anikwenwa, an urbane clergyman was a consummate administrator and a patriot who loved human progress in all of its positive dimensions.
“I have worked closely with him since 2002 when I started campaigning for the position of Anambra State governor till date. He remained committed to a better Nigeria. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
“May God Almighty, who called him home grant him eternal rest in His Kingdom; and also grant the immediate family, the Church of Nigeria, and all of us the fortitude to bear his irreplaceable loss. May God Almighty bless the Church of Nigeria always,” Obi wrote via his verified twitter page.
Archbishop Anikwenwa was born on Friday (Nkwo) 22nd November, 1940 and hails from Oyi Village/ Anambra state.
He was ordained a deacon in 1966 at All Saints Cathedral Onitsha and Priested 1968 in same Church. Consecrated Diocesan Bishop of Awka 1987 and elected Archbishop of Province II in the year 2000. He became the Dean of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) in 2000.
His Grace, Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa is a Colossus in the priesthood and his pastoral calling generally, having received his ministerial training quite early in life. Widely travelled and had seen the other comfort side of life but had remained focused and unmoved in his pastoral calling.
As Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Anambra Stale he had always stood tall and stoutly defended the cause of the downtrodden and less privileged in the Slate and beyond when the occasion demands.
