The Garrison Commander of the Nigerian Army, 82 Division, Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Mohammed Abu, has stressed the need for collaborative efforts between the military and the media in achieving peace and stability in the country.
Brigadier General Abu said this when he played host to members of the Private Broadcast Chapel (PBC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Enugu State Council, at the Garrison Headquarters, Enugu.
The Brigadier General acknowledged the crucial role of the media in safeguarding and protecting the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria and called for accurate and balanced reporting, particularly in relation to military operations and national security matters.
The Garrison Commander also expressed worry over the overwhelming fear of enforcers of the illegal sit-at-home in the state, stressing the need for adequate media sensitization to emancipate residents from fear.
He decried the increasing rate of fake and illicit content on social media, noting that a vibrant and responsible media is essential for the growth and development of the country.
Earlier in a remark, the Chairman of Private Broadcast Chapel (PBC) and the General Manager of Urban Radio Enugu, Mr. Richard Asiegbu, said that the visit was part of efforts to deepen the relationship between the relevant stakeholders and the press in the state.
Mr. Asiegbu described the association as a strong and collective voice that champions a safe and Progressive society, noting that the collaboration will help shape existing wrong narratives about the army through balanced and effective dissemination of security-related issues to the public.
