The 2-day training seminar on Urban Space Greening and Climate Advocacy, hosted by Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, a distinguished advocate for sustainable urban spaces and climate action, was concluded yesterday, August 16th 2023. Prof. Okereke, recognized as an awardee of the International Visitors’ Leadership Program (IVLP) by the US government, brought his exemplary efforts and passion to spearhead this transformative Impact Award event. The event was conducted in partnership with the Center for Climate Change & Development, Society for Planet & Prosperity, and EcoCyclers.
Taking place on August 15th and 16th at Bayview Hotel in Enugu, the event attracted over 400 applications and brought together 30 exceptional youth leaders and captains from diverse backgrounds. Their shared dedication all aimed at driving positive change in the realm of climate action.
The event’s inaugural day witnessed an immersive exploration of climate change science and policy as Prof. Okereke, the event’s host, laid a sturdy foundation by delving into the fundamental principles of climate change. This comprehensive overview set the stage for insightful discussions led by prominent speakers.
Dr. Daniel Ugwu, a distinguished faculty member at Dave Umahi Federal University, expertly illuminated the intricate link between climate change and air pollution. Dr. Ugwu’s presentation underscored how climate change exacerbates air pollution, leading to dire consequences for both the environment and human health.
Prof. Anene Moneke, Director of the Center for Environmental Management at UNEC, further enriched the discussions by addressing critical subjects like air pollution and urban greening. Prof. Moneke emphasized the significance of integrating green spaces into urban planning to counteract the adverse effects of climate change.
Mr. Arum Nnadi Ezebuilo, Deputy Director and Head of the Climate Change Department at the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, provided expert guidance to participants in formulating actionable strategies to engage youth in climate change initiatives.
Participants were also given a unique opportunity to engage in field action, led by Mr. Ubani, where they gained hands-on experience in air quality measurements.
The second day of the event was equally vibrant, with Dr. Chinwe Ogunji providing valuable insights into effectively communicating climate change to school children. She highlighted the vital role of engaging the next generation in this essential discourse.
Mrs. Ogechi Nwonye-Benard, founder of EcoCyclers, a waste recycling company based in Enugu state, guided participants through the intricacies of designing and executing impactful environmental campaigns. She underscored the importance of creativity and strategic thinking in driving effective change.
Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke concluded the event on a high note, equipping participants with a toolkit for becoming effective and empowered climate advocates. The enthusiasm and dedication of the youth leaders and captains were palpable, reflecting the event’s success in nurturing a generation committed to combating climate change.
The event received the honor of the presence of Hon. Commissioner for Environment, Enugu state, Hon. Sam Ugwu, who expressed admiration for the emerging experts and pledged his support for initiatives identified during the event that align with the state’s prosperity and economic viability. Other facilitators includes; Hon. Basil Ojengwa, Mr. Elochukwu Anieze amongst others.
As the event drew to a close, participants were reminded that the next steps for the IVLP impact project includes planting trees around Enugu metropolis, delivering climate change education in three schools and paying a visit to the government of Enugu State. The participants were also left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to drive positive change in their communities. Armed with knowledge, skills, and a shared commitment to a greener and more sustainable future, they are poised to make a lasting impact in the fight against climate change.
