Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has faulted the current legal system in Nigeria.

According to him, the Nigerian Judiciary has been overshadowed by darkness following the recent happenings in the country.

Taking to his X account, Okutepa gave a lengthy write-up, titled “The Bane of Nigerian Society,” highlighting the need for a change in the way Nigerians approach the rule of law.

Mr Jibrin highlighted the hypocrisy in the way people pretend to uphold the value of democracy but in reality the opposite of what they claim in public.

“In Nigeria, those who have no iota of respect for democracy always speak in defense of democracy.

“Those who have no respect for the Nigerian Constitution always pontificate in public speeches that the Nigerian Constitution is supreme, but their actions and decisions are opposite,” he said.

The SAN also pointed out the hypocrisy among the elite, saying that they only speak when their positions are threatened.

“When you see those highly placed and privileged in Nigeria saying that democracy is in danger, just note that their positions are being threatened. When you see them creating offense when none exists, just note that their next meals are in danger of being taken away. When you see any politician speak about party supremacy in public, just note that the same politician has no respect for the supremacy of his or her own party,” he wrote.

The SAN, calling out the double-facedness of Nigerian politicians, rebuked how they go to church and mosques, pontificating holiness, but have criminally siphoned the commonwealth of the people.

He said they speak the same language year in and year out; in his words, “motion without action”.

The SAN further urged Nigerian youths to think beyond what he termed “political affliction”.

“The future that we want for Nigeria must be planned and built by the youths who have ideas of what it takes to build a great nation. No nation can be built on lawlessness,” he said.

The legal practitioner added; “Until the legal profession exhibits light, Nigerians will still be in the darkness of development. Let us do what is right”.
