Some senators have criticised the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, for passing specific bills without adequately informing their colleagues.
In a viral video from Thursday’s sitting, the Senator representing Borno South senatorial district, Ali Ndume, lamented the rate at which the Senate President passes bills without former reading and members’ contributions.
The All Progressives Congress senator said:
“You are just passing bills without prior notification, including money bills; you just pass bills within 2 hours without anyone’s contribution. This is not good for Nigeria.”
Similarly, Senator Ogoshi Onawo from Nasarawa state decried the hasty passage of sensitive bills.
“Since we started this senate, you said it’s a collective Senate, we’ve been ambushed all the time that very sensitive bills and are expected to be passed with a speed of light which isn’t good for this country.”
The lawmaker maintained that passing money bills within 2 hours doesn’t make sense and doesn’t augur well for the country.
The Peoples Democratic Party senator said: “Sir, you are on the seat today; history is going to judge you that things like this are not good for this country.”
Akpabio, in his response, said: “If the bills we are passing are good for the country, history will judge me right. I don’t think we would come here to pass a bill that’s not good for the interest of Nigerians. So, your point of order is noted.”
