The Government Technical College, GTC Enugu state is undergoing serious transformation under its  new principal, Isife Christopher.

A visit to GTC Enugu by our correspondent revealed that under Mr. Isife the school is having a facelift. From the entrance gate of the Technical College, one can’t help but applaud the new management of the institution.

The premises of the school is wearing a new look as Mr. Isife is landscaping the environment to control the menace of erosion in the citadel of learning. One interesting thing we noticed was the engagement of the students of one the sections of the college in the work.

Engr. ThankGod Chidiebube, the head of Blocklaying, Bricklaying and Concrete works section who spoke to our correspondent while they’re working, said they’re mapping the roundabout as part of the  general landscaping of the school. He said the roundabout will help to give direction in the school.

He said the students are doing it as part of their practical work which is a demonstration of the claim that craftsmen are forged in the college.

Another place receiving adequate attention is the building attached to the school hall. Journalist101 learnt that the roof of the building has been blown off even before the arrival of the current principal.

A walk down the dormitory showed that a new sheriff is in town as the walkway has been lightened-up and the bunks (beds) used by the students getting the required attention.

As observed earlier too,  the SS2 and SS3 students of fabrication and welding section were engaged in the work. Mr. Fabian Enuchie, one of the tutors in the section said the section has the capacity of taking care of the welding works of the school and beyond.

Also, efforts are on top gear to control the menace of flooding in the school as additional drainage is been constructed to handle the large volume of water that surge into the compound from shoprite and other adjourning streets.

When contacted over the report of collection of fees in the school, the Principal said he doesn’t pay heed to such negativity as he’s more focused on doing the job he was sent to the school to do.

“Our work is cut out for us and this distraction isn’t necessary,” he said.

“However, let it be on record that the story out there is false. Contrary to the story, we even reduced what the students are paying. Before i came, the students pay departmental levy individually and cumulatively, they pay over N7,000 but i came and harmonised it and today, they’re paying just N2,000. We also reduced the cost of school fees.”

“I’m more interested in making this college which is the first Technical College East of the Niger to take it’s place. You can see the landscaping going on. We have reroofed over 5 buildings and we’re giving the students’ hostels the required attention. These to me are issues worth worrying for. With the help of the old boys of the school, we have been able to provide solar light for the students.

“Anyone making any frivolous allegation is wasting his time because the Board responsible for the school has been here to investigate the lies and they gave me a clean bill. You can approach them to verify what i have just said.

“My job here is cut out for me and i want to live up to responsibility given to me by the state government led by His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah who has shown great desire to invest heavily in Education.”

Our reporter who interacted with some of the senior students gathered that the school has been without electricity supply from Enugu Disco for over 4 years and the same thing with water supply.

The students said that the current principal was the first to call water tanker to give them water in the hostel over the weekend, adding that such has never happened all through their time in the school.
