Amidst the rising political tension in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has finally spoken out, vowing to continue protecting the interests of the citizens of the oil rich state.

Over ten members of the State’s executive council believed to be loyal to the former governor of River state have resigned from their positions.

In a video clip posted on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), the governor expressed his gratitude to the people of Rivers State and pledged to run an inclusive government that upholds the principles of justice and fairness for all, regardless of class or position.

This statement comes against the backdrop of significant political tension in the state. This has seen nine members of Governor Fubara’s cabinet resign and the defection of 27 members of the state assembly from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) within the week.

Following the defection of the lawmakers, the state government ordered the demolition of the Assembly Complex. The governor cited the need to rebuild a suitable structure following an “arson attack” that occurred on October 29, 2023.

The defecting lawmakers are reportedly being backed by the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Immediate-past governor of the state, Nyesom Wike.

The governor and the minister of the FCT are reportedly in a battle over the control of the state’s political structure.
