The People of Amaechi Awkunanaw have presented their Igwe-elect; Chief John Omedoaku Ngene of Umunshiachi Amechi Awkunanaw, to Hon Chimezie Nkwuo, the chairman of Enugu South local Government Area in accordance with law for onward transmission to the state government.

At the presentation ceremony which took place on Monday, February 19, 2024 at the Council Headquarters, the President General of Amechi Development Union (ADU), Chief Paul Agbo, said Chief Omedoaku emerged the Igwe-elect after defeating two other contestants at the election held on Saturday, 17th February, 2024.

“Sequel to the conduct and successful election of new Igwe of Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South local Government Area, the Amechi Community is happy to present to you for recognition, our new Igwe- elect, Chief John Omedoaku Ngene of Umunshiachi Amechi Awkunanaw, having scored the highest number of vote casted as the “OHA CHIRI EZE III of Amechi Awkunanaw Enugu.

“Attached is the photocopy result sheet of Igweship election as conducted on Saturday, the 17 day of February, 2024 at the Amechi Civic Centre under the observation of personnel from the ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, the letter of introduction which was presented by the PG reads in part.

He also stated that their Igwe-elect is a very good man and a lover of peace, hence his election.

“He’s a wonderful man, a man of dignity and integrity and that’s why our people came together to elect him to be their next traditional ruler and the people are expecting him to bring peace to our community.”

In his remark, the Council Boss, Hon Nkwuo charged the Igwe-elect on the need to uphold justice in the handling of the affairs of his community, noting that traditional rulers are the custodians of culture and as such, must live above board.

“I urge you to maintain justice in dealing with the people because Igweship is a sacred office, it’s a traditional institution, he’s the custodian of culture, justice, equity and conscience of the traditional institution of Amechi Community.”

“I’m advising you to know that it’s a sacred office and it’s a call to serve humanity and he should know that it’s a call and he shouldn’t use his position as Igwe to witch-hunt anybody or vendetta. He should use the office to showcase equity, justice and fairness to all manner of persons in his community.

“It’s a call to duty, it’s not call to dabble into frivolities, it’s a call to make sure that he serves the people of Amaechi Awkunanaw with the fear of Almighty God.

Hon. Nkwuo also seized the opportunity to thank the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah for giving the council chairman the enabling environment to thrive; former governor of Old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo for his fatherly role in the council and other stakeholders in the council.

The Igwe-elect who couldn’t hide his joy, thanked the Governor of Enugu state, Barr. Peter Mbah for the ongoing transformational projects. He also thanked the Chairman of Enugu South, assuring him that he will be his partner in progress, while extending his appreciation to the former governor of old Anambra state, Senator Jim Nwobodo, whom he said, is handling Amechi in a peaceful manner.

On what he’s bringing to the table, he promised to bring peace and development as well as unite all factions in his community.

“I’m promising my people that I’ll bring peace, development and anything we can to make our community better. To those that aren’t happy, I’ll visit them in their various homes and beg them to join me in the development of our community.

Also present at the event are the Secretary of the Local Government, Hon. Ikechukwu Orji, Aides of the local government Chairman, Councilor of Amechi Awkunanaw, Representatives of Ohanaeze Ndígbo among others.
