A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Apo has granted the Senator representing Bayelsa Central District, Benson Konbowei bail to the tune of 50 million Naira in a certificate forgery case where the Federal lawmaker is facing trial.
Justice Christopher Oba also ordered that Konbowei must provide two sureties with landed properties in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Senator who was arraigned last Tuesday on charges bordering on forgery of the National Youth Service Corps exemption certificate, among others was however allowed to go home pending the ruling on his bail application fixed for Thursday.
When the matter came up, the prosecution counsel, Rubben Egwaba had opposed the bail application on the ground that the defendant would interfere with his trial if granted bail.
But, the defense counsel, Gordy Uche (SAN) had urged the Court to discountenance the submissions of the prosecution and grant the accused person bail, assuring the Court that the Senator will not jump bail if granted one.
While ruling on the bail application, the trial judge, Justice Christopher Oba granted bail to the Bayelsa State Senator on a N50million condition, while the C-of-O of the landed properties to be presented by the two sureties must be confirmed to be authentic.
Justice Oba however, ordered that the Senator Benson Konbowei be remanded in Kuje Correctional facility pending the perfection of his bail conditions.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter till June 24, 25 and 27 for hearing.
